What a Granada rental is like
- Built around a courtyard: traditional houses face the street with a plain wall and big wooden door, and open inside onto a central garden or patio. It keeps the house private, cool and quiet.
- Pools are common: about half of Granada’s short-term rentals have a pool, often a small plunge pool in the courtyard. In Granada’s heat, this is the single most useful feature for families.
- High ceilings and tiled floors: older homes have tall, cane-lined ceilings and traditional tiles. Check that the bedrooms have air conditioning, as many living areas are open to the courtyard.
- Walkable: most rentals are in or near the historic centre, so you can walk to restaurants, the cathedral and the chocolate museum.

Source: AirROI data for about 100 active Granada listings, so treat these figures as a rough guide. Larger colonial homes with a pool and several bedrooms sit at the top end, and prices rise for Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (21 to 28 March 2027).
Where to stay in Granada: the areas
Historic centre
The streets around Parque Central, the cathedral and Calle La Calzada are the most walkable part of Granada and where most visitors stay. You can walk to everything, but evenings on and near La Calzada are lively and loud. For quieter nights with kids, choose a house a few blocks away from La Calzada rather than on it.
Edges of the centre
Just outside the busiest blocks, streets are calmer and homes can be larger, with a short taxi ride or a longer walk into the centre. A good choice for families who want space and a pool and don’t mind a short ride to dinner.
Laguna de Apoyo
About 30 minutes from Granada, Laguna de Apoyo is a warm, calm crater lake inside a nature reserve. Lodges and lakeside homes here are all about swimming, kayaking and quiet, and many visitors say it’s better to stay a night or two than to day-trip. The road down the crater wall is steep, so it’s easiest with a driver. Read more in our Laguna de Apoyo guide.
Las Isletas
A few of the small islands on Lake Nicaragua just south of Granada have places to stay. It’s the most secluded option and usually the most expensive, and you’ll depend on boats to get anywhere.
Masaya
Masaya is known for its artisans’ market and the volcano national park, but most visitors stay in Granada or at Laguna de Apoyo and visit Masaya on a half-day or evening trip. See Masaya Volcano and Masaya town.
What to check before you book a Granada rental
- A pool: strongly recommended with kids, and find out whether it’s fenced or covered.
- Air conditioning in the bedrooms: not just a fan.
- Noise: how far the house is from La Calzada and from any nearby bars.
- Parking: many colonial homes don’t have a garage, which matters if you’re driving.
- Water and power: ask whether the house has a water tank, as short outages happen.
- Stairs and courtyards: check for steep stairs, open roof terraces and unfenced pools if you have toddlers.

Combine Granada with the beach
Most families spend 2 to 3 nights in Granada and the rest of the trip at the beach. Our own homes are about 1.5 hours away in San Juan del Sur, and roughly 1.5 to 2 hours away in Tola, including Popoyo beach houses, Rancho Santana villas and Hacienda Iguana homes.
