Staying in Colinas de Miramar

Our San Juan del Sur homes are all in Colinas de Miramar, a gated community in the hills above town. You get space, a pool and a view of the ocean, without giving up easy access to town.

To town and the bay: a few minutes by car or taxi. You can walk, but it’s hilly, so most families drive or take taxis.
To the calm family beaches: Nacascolo is about 5 minutes north of town and Marsella about 15. Playa Hermosa, with its beach restaurant and beginner waves, is about 20 minutes south.
Groceries: Palí and mini-markets in town cover the basics. Stock up before you arrive if you’re coming from Managua.
Getting around: a rental car or a driver gives you the most freedom for beach days. We can arrange either.

In town, on the bay

Walk to the beach, restaurants and the pier. Hillside communities like Pelican Eyes and Pacific Marlin, and beachfront condos like La Talanguera, give you views and security close to the centre. It’s the easiest choice without a car, but weekends can be loud.

Playa Marsella

About 15 minutes north of town, Marsella is one of the calmest beaches in the area, with kayaks, paddleboards and a couple of small restaurants. It’s quiet on weekdays and popular with local families at weekends. A good base for families who want peace and gentle water.

Playa Maderas

Next door to Marsella, Maderas is San Juan del Sur’s surf village, with bars, board rentals and big sunsets. Better for surfers and teens than toddlers, because of the currents. There’s no ATM, so bring cash.

Playa El Remanso

About 15 minutes south of town, Remanso has small, forgiving waves and several surf schools. It suits families with kids learning to surf. Expect crowds at weekends.

Playa Hermosa

About 20 minutes south, Hermosa is a long, wide beach with an ecolodge restaurant, showers, loungers and surf lessons. Day use is about $3 per person. Staying nearby means easy beach days, but you’ll need a car for everything else.

Playa El Yankee

A remote surf beach south of town for experienced surfers, reached by a dirt road. It isn’t a swimming beach and has no facilities.

Playa Escameca

A hidden cove south of town, reached through a gated community on a very steep road. It has eco-hotels, surf rentals and a sea turtle hatchery.

El Ostional

A fishing village near the Costa Rica border, a few kilometres past the La Flor turtle refuge. It’s the least visited part of the coast, with small inns, a mangrove and no ATM. The new coastal road has made it easier to reach.

Good to know before you book

Getting here: Managua airport is about 2 to 2.5 hours away by car. Liberia, Costa Rica means a border crossing. See how to get to San Juan del Sur.

Money: US dollars are widely accepted. Bring small bills for taxis and beach restaurants.
