What it’s like to stay in Popoyo

Surf for every level: Beginners Bay has a soft, sheltered wave for first lessons, Guasacate works for most levels, and the Popoyo reefs are for experienced surfers. See the surf guide.
Not gated: Popoyo and Guasacate are open villages, so it’s more social and walkable than the gated communities. If you want everything inside the gates, look at Rancho Santana or Hacienda Iguana.
Swimming: these are open surf beaches with currents and no lifeguards. For calmer water, Playa Gigante’s bay is about 20 minutes south.
Bring cash: there are no ATMs in Playa Popoyo or Guasacate, and small places often add a surcharge for cards.
Roads: the last stretch into Popoyo and Guasacate is dirt. A regular car is usually fine in the dry season, but a high-clearance car or 4×4 helps from May to November.
Power and internet: power cuts are common in Popoyo. If you need to work, ask us about the connection and backup power at the house you like.
